Provincial Effective Speaking Competition 2018

On Saturday April 14, all nine regional Effective Speaking Competition finalists met at the École nationale de police du Québec to take part in the provincial competition.

The Air Cadet League’s Effective Speaking Competition takes place on a variety of levels (local, regional, provincial and national) and aims to help cadets improve their presentation in public, boost their self-confidence and express themselves more effectively.

Cpl Elizabeth Johnson, winner of the provincial competition, will go on to represent Quebec and Ottawa Valley at the national competition, which will be held on June 15, 2017 at the national Annual General Meeting.

The Effective Speaking Competition is divided into two parts. First, all candidates must present a prepared 5 to 6 minute speech on a topic of their choice that is based on the themes provided by the Air Cadet League of Canada. Second, they must present a 2-3 minute impromptu speech. The theme of this speech was the same for all candidates and they only had 3 minutes to prepare. This year, the theme of the impromptu speech was: “as a future digital citizen, how will social networking affect the different aspects of your life?” Congratulations to all participants for your exceptional performances!

This event could not have been possible without the generosity of Université Laval’s, our dedicated volunteers and our judges (M. Maxime Barrette, Mme Marie-Jeanne Carrière et M. William Hounkounou). We would also like to thank the Master of Ceremonies WO1 Rudy Egeileh from 921 Optimist L’Ancienne-Lorette Squadron.

Read on to find out more about her outstanding acheivements!

Lieutenant-Colonel (Retired) Maryse Carmichael, CD has been fascinated by aviation for as long as she can remember.  At a young age, she followed in her three brothers’ footsteps and joined the Royal Canadian Air Cadets with 630 Squadron in Quebec City.  At 16 years of age, she was awarded a gliding scholarship and was able to realize her dream of flying.

Lcol (Retd) Carmichael continued her aviation adventures as a military pilot when she joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1990.  Throughout her 22-year career, she accumulated over 3,500 hours on three different aircrafts: the Tutor, the Challenger and the Hercules.

In November 2000, Lcol (Retd) Carmichael made history when she was selected, after a grueling competition, to fly with 431 Air Demonstration Squadron, the Canadian Armed Forces’ Snowbirds. She was the Snowbird’s first female pilot and the first female pilot in the world to fly with a Jet Demonstration Team.

In 2015, Lcol (Retd) Carmichael featured in the Women Executive Network’s Top 100 of Canada’s Most Powerful Women and in 2013, she received the Elsie MacGil Northern Lights Award. She is now the Honorary President of the Air Cadet League of Canada and works at CAE as the Canada Region Communication and Government Relations Manager.
