2021 Provincial Effective Speaking Competition

On Saturday April 24, all eight regional Effective Speaking Competition finalists met virtually to take part in the provincial competition.

The Air Cadet League’s Effective Speaking Competition takes place on a variety of levels (local, regional, provincial and national) and aims to help cadets improve their presentation in public, boost their self-confidence and express themselves more effectively.

Sgt Perrine Yode from Squadron 921 Optimiste L’Ancienne-Lorette, winner of the provincial competition, will go on to represent Québec et Vallée de l’Outaouais at the national competition, which will be held on June 5, 2021.

The Effective Speaking Competition is divided into two parts. First, all candidates must present a prepared 5 to 6-minute speech on a topic of their choice that is based on the themes provided by the Air Cadet League of Canada. Second, they must present a 2-3-minute impromptu speech. The theme of this speech was the same for all candidates and they only had 3 minutes to prepare. This year, the theme of the impromptu speech was: “How would you explain to a young person all the benefits of participating in a public speaking competition?”

Congratulations to all participants for your exceptional performances!

This event could not have been possible without our dedicated volunteers and our judges (ladies Marie-Jeanne Carrière, Lynn Sénécal and Louise Lee. We would also like to thank the Masters of Ceremony, WO1 Tommy Harvey from 634 Jonquière and WO1 Breanna Sirois from 51 Canadian Aviation Museum.

COVID-19 : An important message from Brigadier-General Cochrane

Brigadier-General Cochrane, Commander of the National Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers

The safety and welfare of everyone who participates in the Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers Programs is always MY top priority. As such, I take very seriously the responsibility to protect cadets, JCRs and their supervisors from any real or apparent health or safety concern.

Upon careful review of a number of factors, including the potential for risk of exposure and further transmission of COVID-19, I have rescinded authorization for all international and domestic recreational trips through April 30, 2020.

As a result of the announcement by the World Health Organization, I have also directed additional limitations be placed on Cadet Corps or Squadron Activities.

The cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger program is a safe, fun and secure place for young people to enjoy experiences they can’t get anywhere else, and we want to ensure that we can continue to offer these valuable programs in communities across the country. One very important way you can help us accomplish this is, if you are experiencing symptoms such as cough and fever, please take the time to recover before returning to cadet activities. You will not be penalized, but must notify your cadet corps, squadron or Junior Canadian Ranger Patrol to ensure that your absence is recorded as excused, and we can continue to track, assist and further protect the Cadet program and its participants from further exposure and transmission.

As you know, decisions to cancel, postpone or reschedule activities and events are never taken lightly. I want to re-emphasize that these actions are being taken to protect cadets, their families and staff from the unnecessary risk of exposure and the possibility of quarantine or self-isolation, either overseas or here in Canada. We will endeavor to find opportunities to reschedule core events and activities to ensure we continue to offer unique and challenging opportunities for the youth of the Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers programs.

In line with other youth organizations and school boards, we are taking these unprecedented precautions to protect the safety and well-being of all who have dedicated their time and efforts to the Cadet and Junior Canadian Rangers programs.

We will continue to monitor the actions taken by other like-minded youth organizations, in cooperation with local, provincial and federal health officials, and will adjust our approach as it continues to unfold. Cadet Corps and Squadrons and Junior Canadian Rangers Patrols should consult their chain of command for guidance should there be any changes required to programs or activities.
I am proud of the maturity shown by the Staff, Cadets, and other stakeholders as we navigate this and for continuing to be understanding. We hope that we will be back to our normal rhythm as soon as we can.

The Quebec and Ottawa Valley Committee’s 77th Provincial AGM

The 77th Provincial Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the Air Cadet League of Canada (Quebec and Ottawa Valley) took place from September 28 to 30, 2018. Around 300 managers, partners and cadets came together at the École nationale de police du Québec in Nicolet for a weekend of sharing, training and recognition.

The Chairman’s Award also took place during the AGM. The Chairman’s Award allows cadets who take part in the competition to develop the following qualities: a sense of responsibility and commitment, a desire to excel and strong communication skills.

This year, Warrant Officer Second Class Christelle Ayoub has been selected to represent Quebec and Ottawa Valley as the cadet ambassador. It’s worth nothing that the Chairman’s Award is the Provincial Committee’s most prestigious award offered to cadets. Adj 2 Ayoub will have the opportunity to represent cadets throughout Quebec and Ottawa Valley as a spokesperson. All nine cadets who went through to the provincial competition will also be able to represent their respective regions and be part of the cadet ambassador’s team.

Here are the members of this year’s cadet ambassador’s team:

  • WO2 Christelle Ayoub (830 Pierrefonds)
  • WO1 Laura Gordon-Guimont (632 Phoenix)
  • F Sgt Gabriel Paré (894 Charlesbourg)
  • WO2 Tayeb Idjakirene (518 Rosemont)
  • WO1 Andrew Ma (338 Junior Wildcats Brossard Optimist)
  • WO2 Lucas Galand (100 Laval)
  • WO2 Ève-Marie Roy (785 St-Eustache)
  • WO2 Simon Bouchard (634 Jonquière)
  •

This year’s AGM would not have taken place without the involvement of our dedicated volunteers. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their outstanding generosity: BMO Bank of Montreal, NAV Canada, Aéro Montréal, the Royal Canadian Air Force Association and the Cosmodôme.

Air Cadet League of Canada’s 77th National Annual General Meeting

The Air Cadet League of Canada’s 77th national Annual General Meeting (AGM) took place at the Sheraton hotel in Laval from June 14 to June 16, 2018.

During the event, national committees and voting members from all over Canada joined together to help the League plan its next steps as it move forward into the future.

The National Effective Speaking Competition also took place during this weekend. The eleven finalists who took part in the provincial competitions had the chance not only to take part in the final competition, but also to meet cadets from all over Canada. It goes without saying that all the cadets who took part offered truly exceptional speeches.

This event could not have taken place if it were not for out dedicated volunteers, as well as the cadets from 100 Squadron Laval. We would also like to thank our sponsors for their generosity: CAE, Francine Charbonneau (member for Mille-Îles), Jean Habel (member for Sainte-Rose), Jean Rousselle (member for Vimont), Monique Sauvé (member for Fabre), Guy Ouellette (member for Chomedy), Saul Polo (member for Laval-des-Rapides) et Sylvain Gaudreault (member for Jonquière), Délices de la forêt Valli, Domaine le Cageot as well as Table de concertation agroalimentaire des Laurentides.
