Provincial Effective Speaking 2024

– NEWS RELEASE –

Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu – Warrant Officer Second Class Kaeli Eklo, attached to 626 Châteauguay Squadron, won GOLD at the provincial effective speaking competition held in Drummondville on Saturday, April 6. The event, organized by the Air Cadet League of Canada – Quebec and Ottawa Valley Provincial Committee (QOVPC), brought together the 9 finalists from the regional competitions.

The Air Cadet League’s Effective Speaking competition is held at all levels (local, regional, provincial and national) and aims to enable cadets to improve their public presentation skills, gain greater self-confidence and communicate their messages more effectively. WO2 Kaeli Eklo will have the honour of representing Quebec and the Ottawa Valley at the national competition, to be held virtually on May 4, 2024.

The Effective Speaking competition is divided into two parts. First, all candidates must present a prepared speech lasting 5 to 6 minutes on a topic they select themselves from themes announced by the Air Cadet League of Canada. For the second part, they had to present an improvised speech lasting 2 to 3 minutes. The theme of this speech was the same for all candidates, and they had just 3 minutes to prepare. This year, the theme of the impromptu speech was: Climate change and the environment are currently major issues for mankind. In your opinion, what are the 2 or 3 most important measures that today’s youth can adopt to improve the environment? It goes without saying that all the participating cadets gave us outstanding performances. Congratulations to all contestants !

Of course, this event would not have been possible without the involvement of our dedicated volunteers and the participation of our guest judges, Capt François Dutil, Mr André Lepage and Ms Eileen Vivan. We would also like to highlight the participation of Clara Marcoux and Alek Guitard, both cadets until recently in the Quebec City region, as Masters of Ceremonies.

Effective Speaking 2023 – registration underway

PUBLIC SPEAKING, YOU CAN LEARN IT!

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN THE CHALLENGE?

Just like writing and reading, oral communication is an integral part of our daily lives. Acquiring this skill allows us, among other things, to “learn to question ourselves and others in order to inform ourselves or receive feedback on different subjects”.

What is the purpose of speaking well?

Whether it’s for a job interview, negotiating a contract or expressing one’s point of view during a discussion with friends or at a family dinner, no one can escape the fact that in everyday life, they have to convince their interlocutors.

Effective speaking is the art of speaking well, of convincing and persuading through the use of words. To arouse the assent of his audience is essential to the success of a speech. But how do you go about it? How to structure your speech? How to work on your elocution? How to manage your stress? How to occupy the space ? How to make your body speak by mobilizing non-verbal language? Speech is not given, we use it, we tame it, and this, in the hope of making it a communication tool.

The goal of effective speaking

To help build confidence and learn to tame your fears and enhance your voice so that you can confidently face the world ahead.

Are you ready for the challenge?  Register now by completing the ACC54 form.

All participants must complete the registration form, starting with the local level.

You can see or review the speeches of last year’s provincial winner, Sergeant Karam Albatal of 687 Richelieu Laval Squadron, by clicking on the speech of your choice : prepared or impromptu.
